IN CONVERSATION with historian + journalist Rick Perlstein

Discover a bit about our In Conversation guest, Rick Perlstein!

1. How do you describe yourself as an artist?
As a historian, my job is to represent the world as accurately as possible, using documented fact, but as a writer my job is mind control: to seduce the reader, moment by moment, into surrendering their perception of reality, their sense self and other, and indeed the passage of time itself, to the world my words create. But the most important job is to activate in my readers higher sense of citizenship: to grasp how our national community has come to be, to better wrench it toward justice.

2. What's the best part of your job?
Connecting with readers, especially when they let me know how my work has helped them better understand the world.

3. What's the best advice that you can give to someone who is exploring your career?
Tell the truth as you see it without fear or favor, and devil take the hindmost.
