Enrique is a substance abuse counselor, mentor and community organizer. During the 17 years he was incarcerated he attended classes, workshops, self-help groups, and obtained his GED as well as his certification to be a substance use counselor. Thanks to his rehabilitation and transformation the Governor of California publicly commuted Enrique’s sentence. However, due to his legal status in the United States he was transferred to Golden State Annex in McFarland, California, pending deportation.

Enrique’s perseverance and love for education and for others made him a leader and mentor for many who were detained with him. Enrique understands that a person is not defined by their country and that we are all human beings that deserve an opportunity to share our transformation with others.

On February 11, 2022 Enrique was granted relief and was released from detention after 16 months of being caged. Enrique is currently utilizing his certification to help men change their lives around. He is still involved as an organizer in the immigrant justice space by helping different organizations put together programs that help empower immigrant communities.
